Black Clover Episode 71 (Episode review)
[SPOILER ALERT]
Star Festival ends after the announcement of the Royal Knights. An exam will be held to decide who will be part of the Royal Knights that will infiltrate the Eye of the Midnight sun's hideout. Mereoleona Vermillion is introduced as very fierce with an intense military attitude towards the squad, replacing Fuegoleon captain for the time being. Explaining that she is stronger than Fuegoleon, called the undefeated Lioness, but stayed behind the scenes and not taking the position of squad captain to avoid fighting and politics.
The Crimson Lion King squad members get a scolding from Mereoleona demanding them to show that they have been taught by the strongest knight, Fuegoleon. From this, she decides to have a hot springs training camp. Asta and Yuno are forced to join as number 1 and 2 rookies of the year.
Captains gather in a bar after the announcement of the squad rankings. Yami brags about his squad second place and gets on the other captains' nerves. Bartender smoothly calms the other riled up captains with some cocktails, he later turns out to be Wizard King Julius.
"Sisgoleon" (dubbed by Yami) appears and drags Yami and Charlotte along. Before long Noelle is also caught. As they arrive the what you'd expect is a relaxing hot spring turns out to be a volcanic belt that goes by Yultim Volcano but beyond the belt at the summit is a hot spring. But as they start the race they are quickly overwhelmed by the excruciating heat and out of control mana.
We are introduced to a new skill, mana skin that Yami and Charlotte use to quickly get through the volcano belt. Yuno catches on quickly and the other follows. Asta and Noelle are left behind. Mereoleona, tells Noelle about how she resembles her mother who was known as the battlefield angel, Lady Acier. We get a flashback to when she was was pregnant with Noelle and see Mereoleona and Fuegoleon by her bedside and the Silva siblings outside the door.
Asta with no mana struggles and Mereoleona tells him he can go home. With a determination for his dream, he can do it without getting discouraged by Mereoleona and the episode ends there. The episode has a very comedic tone as most of the time is spent gathering people for the training camp but it's also about showing Mereoleona's strong character.
Mereoleona gives everyone more confidence as her presence is strong and reassuring when she expresses that Fuegoleon's absence isn't permanent and that his strong will continues on by the squad showing their strength and his teachings. Though seeming harsh she still motivates the Crimson Lion squad, Asta and Noelle to show their determination using this intense well-though-out military training.
As a manga reader, I think the anime is doing a great job at adapting the manga. This episode shows how badass Mereoleona is and throws everyone into training in preparation for the upcoming exam.
